Commanders Coach Quinn: Neither Mariota nor Daniels are Stars or Starters Yet, Training Camp Decision Still Unknown

Dan Quinn confirms that the Commanders have not yet chosen a starting QB

Head coach Dan Quinn echoed Jayden Daniels’ sentiment that he is not yet a star or a starter on the Commanders team, during a press conference following the conclusion of the offseason program on Thursday. Quinn emphasized that no definitive decision has been made regarding the team’s starting quarterback position. Marcus Mariota, who joined the Commanders as a free agent this offseason, has been sharing first-team reps with Daniels and will continue to do so during training camp.

Despite Mariota’s experience and reputation, Daniels has shown significant growth that impresses the coaching staff. However, Quinn emphasized that Daniels would need to demonstrate continued improvement to secure the starting spot for the upcoming season. The Commanders are taking a patient approach in evaluating their quarterback options and are not yet ready to crown a starter. As the team heads into training camp, both Daniels and Mariota will have the chance to showcase their skills and stake their claim as the starting quarterback for the Commanders.

Quinn did not specify when he plans to announce the starting quarterback for the team. He mentioned that both players have been progressing well and showing promise in practice sessions so far. While Mariota may have more experience under his belt, it seems like Daniels is quickly proving himself as a valuable member of the team. With training camp still months away, there is plenty of time for both players to prove themselves before a decision is made about who will be under center come game day.
