Colombian President Gustavo Petro Ousts Army Commander in Escalating Violence Region Amid Peace Negotiations

In the midst of crisis in southwest Colombia, Gustavo Petro removes Army commander

In the midst of escalating violence in the southwest region of Colombia, President Gustavo Petro has dismissed General Luis Mauricio Ospina as commander of the Army on Monday. Two people have been killed and nine others injured in attacks that have intensified in recent days, largely due to the Central General Staff (EMC), a faction of the FARC. The government had previously suspended a bilateral ceasefire agreement with the EMC in Nariño, Valle del Cauca, and Cauca due to ongoing violence against indigenous people and security forces.

The Army has increased its operations in the region, which has proven to be a stumbling block in peace negotiations with the EMC. During his tenure as Army commander from August 12, 2022 to his dismissal on Monday, General Ospina remained relatively unnoticed in security decisions. However, he was embroiled in a scandal involving allegations of monitoring and illegally intercepting his wife’s English teacher and linking him to FARC dissidents.

General Luis Emilio Cardozo Santamaría will take over as commander of the Army after being appointed by President Petro. With over 35 years of experience serving in various capacities within the Colombian military, General Cardozo Santamaría brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership skills to his new role. He holds a degree in Military Sciences from the General Military Cadet School and a master’s degree in Security and Defense. Additionally, he has undergone training in engineering.

Cardozo Santamaría’s appointment comes at a critical time for Colombia as it faces ongoing security challenges in its southwestern region. As such, his leadership will be crucial for strengthening national defense and ensuring that peace negotiations with dissident groups are successful.
