Germany’s Navy Interested in Buying Israeli Hermes 900 UAVs for Defense

The German Navy is interested in purchasing the Hermes 900 UAV produced by the Israeli company Elbit, as reported by the Israel Defense website. According to a spokesman for Lufthansa, there is a collaboration between Lufthansa Technik and Elbit Systems on military drones. However, Elbit has declined to comment on the matter. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Lufthansa Technik and Elbit Systems in January 2023, but there is no official contract in place yet.

Lufthansa Technik is handling maintenance and crew training for the eight Hermes 900 StarLiner UAVs that the German Navy is looking into an agreement for supply and maintenance. Elbit will be responsible for producing these UAVs. The cost of the contract has not been disclosed. This project marks Lufthansa Technik’s first UAV maintenance endeavor, as they have previously provided support for NATO aircraft fleets including F-35 fighter jets, Chinook transport helicopters, and Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft.
