CMS Emphasizes Health Equity through Strategic Plan and Conference

Health Equity Remains a Priority for CMS

Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have been putting a strong emphasis on health equity across multiple initiatives. This includes updates to the Health Equity Fact Sheet and Strategic Plan webpage, which align with the 2023 Strategic Framework and highlight specific actions and policies implemented by CMS. The Strategic Plan is structured around strategic pillars, each with a focus on different aspects of health equity.

In addition to these efforts, CMS recently held its Health Equity Conference, which built upon the success of the inaugural conference in June 2023. The conference covered a wide range of topics such as maternal health, access and affordability, and culturally linguistic care. Speakers included federal officials, community-based organizations, advocates, and private partners, all coming together to discuss ways to advance health equity.

Additionally, leaders from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) published an article in Health Affairs on June 4th detailing their efforts to promote health equity through existing and new models that incentivize equitable care. The article provides updates on accomplishments from the past year as well as new initiatives for 2024. Areas of focus include safety-net provider participation, data collection, and payment innovations.
