An asteroid known as 2024 GJ2 was discovered on April 9 and had a close, but harmless, flyby of Earth on April 11. This asteroid, about the size of a car, passed by at a distance of only 7,641 miles from our planet. The closest approach of the asteroid to Earth was at 2:28:42 p.m. EDT on Thursday. According to the European Space Agency, 2024 GJ2 measures between 2.5 and 5 meters and would have burnt up in Earth’s atmosphere if it had come closer.
NASA has identified nearly 35,000 near-Earth asteroids, with only a few posing any threat to the planet. Despite its proximity to Earth, asteroid 2024 GJ2 was determined to be harmless and will not pose a threat to our planet in the future. With ongoing monitoring and research, scientists are able to track these asteroids and assess the potential risks they may pose to our planet.
