Taiwan has condemned China for its “shameless” behavior after Beijing’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations expressed gratitude for the world’s concern about a powerful earthquake that hit Taiwan. The Chinese government views Taiwan as part of its territory and often tries to speak for the island on the global stage, causing anger in Taipei as Taiwan is a separate democratic entity.
Following the 7.2 earthquake in eastern Taiwan that resulted in the loss of 10 lives, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.N., Geng Shuang, mentioned the quake during a meeting about children’s rights, referring to Taiwan as “China’s Taiwan.” Despite expressing concern and offering aid for the damage caused by the quake, China’s actions were met with criticism from Taiwan’s foreign ministry.
Taiwan’s government has expressed appreciation for the messages of support and sympathy from governments and leaders around the world, including the United States, Taiwan’s key international ally. However, China’s use of the Taiwan earthquake for its own agenda demonstrates its lack of goodwill towards Taiwan according to Taiwan’s foreign ministry.
Overall, Taiwan views China’s actions as a form of psychological warfare and condemned China for trying to manipulate the international community’s perception of the situation. Despite these challenges, Taiwan continues to seek international support while maintaining its diplomatic relationships on its own terms.
