China’s Chang’e 6 Lands on Dark Side of Moon for Second Time: A Look at the Remarkable Mission

Chinese ship collects samples on the dark side of the Moon

On June 2, China successfully landed the Chang’e 6 spacecraft on the dark side of the Moon for the second time. The mission is set to collect rock samples from the oldest depression in this area, which will be brought back to Earth for analysis. The landing was supported by the Thuoc Kieu 2 relay satellite of the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA).

The Chang’e 6 spacecraft launched from the Wenchang spaceport on May 3 and has been circling the Moon since then, searching for the best landing spot. After landing, equipment on board, including instruments designed by international partners, will help collect samples and conduct scientific experiments. The mission has achieved several technological breakthroughs, including designing and controlling a retrograde orbit on the Moon.

The Chang’e 6 mission was initially planned as a backup for the Chang’e 5 mission, which brought back rock samples from the bright side of the Moon in 2020. Scientists hope that samples from the dark side will provide insights into the composition and history of the Moon. China’s efforts in lunar exploration have led to significant discoveries and advancements in space technology.
