In the midst of growing tensions between the United States and China, the Ministry of Commerce in China has announced an anti-dumping probe into polyoxymethylene (POM) copolymers imported from several countries, including the US, European Union, Taiwan, and Japan. These thermoplastics are crucial in various industries and serve as substitutes for metals like copper and zinc.
The investigation is expected to take a year but may be extended by another six months. This move comes as a response to President Joe Biden’s decision to impose increased tariffs on imports of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and other products over the next two years. The tariffs on Chinese EVs will almost quadruple from 27.5% to 100%.
In retaliation, China has vowed to protect its rights by taking necessary actions. The European Union is also looking into state support for Chinese EV makers and may impose extra import duties if it finds unfair pricing. These escalating trade tensions between the US, China, and the EU have raised concerns about their broader impact on the global economy.
The outcome of these investigations and any resulting trade actions will be closely monitored by businesses and policymakers worldwide to assess potential implications. Meanwhile, renewable energy continues to grow in importance within China’s manufacturing sector, as evidenced by an employee seen working on a solar panel production line at GCL System Integration Technology factory in Hefei, Anhui province on May 16, 2024.
