Cherokee Nation Invests $2.1 Million in Health and Wellness Programs for Community Centers: Boosting Resources in Rural Areas

New Funding for Health and Wellness Programs Announced by Cherokee Nation

The Cherokee Nation recently announced new funding for health and wellness programs for community centers. This funding, totaling $2.1 million, will benefit all 86 community groups represented. Abby McLemore from Chewey highlighted the importance of this funding, noting the lack of resources in her town.

Cherokee Nation Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. emphasized that the 86 organizations are mainly located in rural areas without access to basic amenities, making them vital to their communities. In Marble City, a new community center has opened with fitness equipment, while the Kenwood center offers workout spaces, courts, and playing fields for traditional and modern games.

Each community group will receive $25,000 from the Cherokee Nation to decide how to utilize the funding. Plans include investing in new clinics and prevention efforts, as well as decreasing smoking and promoting physical activity. The $25,000 grant will be an annual initiative, with plans to assist community groups in covering their electric bills to enhance their ability to help their neighbors.
