Chelsea Faces Uncertainty over Ben Chilwell’s Future: Injury Struggles and Managerial Changes Have Raised Questions about His Role at Stamford Bridge

Enzo Maresca’s presence leads to uncertainty over Ben Chilwell’s future at Chelsea

Chelsea is facing uncertainty over Ben Chilwell’s future with the club due to his injury struggles throughout the 2023/24 season. Despite being under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2027, Enzo Maresca could have other plans for the 27-year-old left-back. With Ian Maatsen likely to join Aston Villa, Marc Cucurella performing well for Spain at Euro 2024, and Levi Colwill occasionally playing on the left, Chilwell’s place in the squad could be up for discussion.

Chilwell joined Chelsea in 2020 from Leicester City in a £45m deal that generated plenty of excitement among fans. However, a cruciate ligament injury suffered in November of the following year sidelined him for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery. He encountered two less serious hamstring issues in 2022/23 and faced more hamstring and knee trouble that caused him to miss chunks of matches in 2023/24. Despite these challenges, Chilwell did captain Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool in February.

Although Chilwell has been an important player for Chelsea since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, it seems that he may not be part of Maresca’s long-term plans for the club. The Daily Telegraph has suggested that injury woes, competition for his place, and a new approach from manager Enzo Maresca could be the reasons behind the uncertainty surrounding Chilwell’s future at the club. As such, it remains to be seen whether or not Chilwell will remain with Chelsea beyond this season or if he will move on elsewhere.
