Century-old funeral home destroyed by fire: owner’s resilience and community support.

On Wednesday morning, a devastating fire struck Pennick Funeral Home in North Philadelphia, leaving behind nothing but charred remains of the nearly century-old establishment. The funeral home, located on Montgomery Avenue in Brewerytown, has been a beloved part of the community since 1928 and now stands as a grim reminder of its storied past.

Shelli Pennick, the third-generation owner of the funeral home, spoke about her determination to keep the family business going despite the tragedy that had befallen her. She took over the business from her grandmother and was grateful that her 87-year-old mother and 16-year-old nephew were able to evacuate safely when the fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. Pennick’s nephew alerted everyone to evacuate the house, and firefighters safely removed the bodies of the deceased from the reposing room.

Despite the loss of their beloved establishment, Pennick expressed gratitude for her community’s support during this difficult time. She was overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness and support from the community, with many reaching out to offer help and comfort. As the Philadelphia Fire Marshal’s office investigates the cause of the fire, Pennick is already thinking about rebuilding and restoring her family’s legacy.
