Center for Safer Internet: Croatia’s Efforts to Keep Children Safe Online with New Partnerships and AI Assistance

Continued efforts of The Center for a Safer Internet in protecting children with a one million euro project

On Tuesday, representatives from the Osje Center for Missing and Abused Children (CNZD), the company “A1,” and the University “Algebra” signed a partnership agreement to continue the Center for Safer Internet project. This project is valued at over one million euros and will be co-financed with over 50 percent of the funding coming from EU funds.

Since its inception in 2015, the Center for Safer Internet in Osijek has focused on three main areas of work: preventive activities to raise awareness about child safety online, a helpline (0800 606 606) for children experiencing violence, abuse, or harmful behavior on the internet. Additionally, they have an anonymous line for reporting illegal internet content, especially related to child sexual abuse. Last year in Croatia, 460 criminal acts of exploiting children for pornography were recorded, showing a significant increase.

The CNZD emphasizes the importance of reaching as many children, young people, and parents as possible through prevention efforts. They aim to educate individuals about online safety and plan to incorporate artificial intelligence to assist children using various internet services. The partnership with the company “A1 Hrvatska” has allowed for the opening of a counseling center in one of their Zagreb offices, focusing on parent and child education to create a safer online environment.

The University “Algebra” joined this project to contribute their expertise in cyber security and education in that field. They aim to provide information to young people, children, and parents on how to stay safe online and avoid situations where they may be exploited. By raising awareness and providing resources
