Having a Blast at Fleet Science Center Viewing of Partial Eclipse

Monday morning, a crowd of people gathered at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park to witness a 55%-60% partial solar eclipse. Despite not being plunged into total darkness, the event was still a spectacular sight that took everyone’s breath away.

At 11:11 a.m., the peak of the eclipse served as a reminder of our place in the universe. Guests at the center were provided with sun-safe glasses and gathered around the Bea Evenson Fountain to watch the celestial show unfold. Throughout the morning, amateur and professional astronomers offered visitors a glimpse of the sun through solar telescopes and conducted solar system demonstrations.

Despite some scattered clouds passing in front of the sun, the morning was mostly bright. Visitors got creative with paper pinhole viewers and even used a Ritz cracker as a solar projector. One visitor had a personal touch as she watched it through her late father’s eclipse glasses, bringing his spirit to the event.
