Celebrating Storytelling: San Diego Comic-Con and UC San Diego’s The Science of Story Masterclass

Science Fiction Enthusiasts Invited to Dive into ‘Science of Story’ at UCSD, Meet ‘Star Trek’ Celebrities, and ‘Jaws’ Cast as Well

San Diego Comic-Con draws fans of sci-fi and pop culture to the city every July. UC San Diego is also a popular destination during this time, with its ArtPower program hosting “The Science of Story,” a Pre-Con Masterclass event starting on July 23. This event features iconic film and franchise, as well as special guests George Takei and John Cho.

The series of events will kick off with “A Tale of Two Sulus: An Evening with George Takei and John Cho,” followed by a screening of Star Trek on July 24. On July 26, as part of Shark Week, there will be a screening of Jaws at the Epstein Family Amphitheater. All events are ticketed, ranging from $10 to $120.

“The Science of Story” is more than just events – it’s a celebration of storytelling, science fiction, and fantasy. Packages are available starting at $425, which includes VIP access to events, workshops with Clarion Writers’ Workshop faculty and alums, and forums at UCSD’s Park & Market in the East Village. For those interested in housing, it is available for an additional cost.

For Comic-Con attendees who may find San Diego accommodations fully booked in July, there is an option with housing, meals, a trolley pass, and limited access to UCSD events priced at $640. This option is only available to students enrolled in University of California
