Cautionary Tale of Dangerous Fall in Field: Ms. Lien’s Lucky Escape from Paralysis

The woman suffered a spinal injury after falling 6 m

On May 23, Ms. Lien, a 42-year-old woman, was picking peppers alone in the field when her ladder overturned and she fell from a height of 6 meters to the ground, losing consciousness. Nearly half an hour later, she woke up and called her family to inform them of the incident. She was then taken to a hospital in Dak Nong for emergency treatment before being transferred to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

Doctors advised Ms. Lien to undergo spinal surgery due to her injuries, but she refused because she was afraid of paralysis. However, her condition worsened the next day and she was admitted to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on May 24. Dr. Huynh Tri Dung from the Department of Neurosurgery at the Neuroscience Center explained that Ms. Lien had multiple fractures of the vertebral body in her L2 spine (S32), reducing the height of the vertebral body by nearly 50%.

The surgical team used the C-arm system to locate key locations so that screws could be adjusted and placed without misalignment or misplacement during percutaneous screw surgery. After surgery, Ms. Lien was alert, had pain relief, and was able to walk after one day. Three days later, she recovered well, had no pain or numbness in her legs, and was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Dung stated that falls can cause serious injuries such as broken back and neck vertebrae, spinal damage, paralysis of the spinal cord, broken spinal cord, broken arms or legs, traumatic brain injury or broken coordination. He advised people who do climbing work to ensure their ladders are sturdy and wear protective equipment to prevent accidents like this one from happening again.
