Cancer Survivors Turn to Space Exploration as a Way to Coping: Stories of Amaey and the Author’s Recovery Journey

Amaey Shah and the Moon

Our cancer treatments presented us with various obstacles as we worked towards recovery. Amaey’s treatment required him to be isolated after undergoing irradiation and a transplant. However, despite being confined to his room, he found solace in exploring the Moon and classifying galaxies through online tools like MoonZoo and GalaxyZoo. His intellectual curiosity allowed him to navigate the Solar System and Universe from the confines of his room, delving into the mysteries of outer space.

On the other hand, I focused on my own treatment, which made it difficult for me to spend as much time online as I would have preferred. The distractions of medical appointments and procedures consumed much of my time, making it challenging to keep up with the virtual world outside of the hospital walls. Despite these challenges, Amaey’s determination to engage in citizen science projects served as a source of inspiration for me during my own recovery journey. His ability to transcend physical limitations through technology highlighted the boundless possibilities that exist beyond our current circumstances.
