Canada Invests $11 Million in B.C.-based Organizations for Quantum Computing Innovation

In a major announcement, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan), has revealed that over $11 million in PacifiCan funding has been allocated to three B.C.-based organizations leading the way in quantum computing innovation.

The funding includes $3.4 million granted to 1QB Information Technologies, Inc. (1QBit) for the development and commercialization of their Topological Quantum Architecture Design (TopQAD™️). Additionally, Simon Fraser University has received $4.3 million to establish the Quantum Fabrication Centre at their 4D LABS facility, while the University of British Columbia has received over $3.2 million to enhance their capacity for commercializing quantum technologies at the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute.

These investments mark the first three B.C.-based projects supported by the Regional Quantum Initiative under the National Quantum Strategy of the Government of Canada, demonstrating Canada’s position as a leader in quantum science. The anticipated benefits from these announcements are expected to reach 41 businesses worldwide.

PacifiCan is implementing this initiative with a goal of strengthening Canada’s global standing by assisting companies and organizations in generating employment opportunities and commercializing quantum technology both locally and internationally. These investments will help drive innovation and growth in this rapidly developing field, positioning B.C.-based companies at the forefront of quantum computing research and development globally.
