Camden County Promotes Safe Storage Saves Lives through Education during Public Health Week

Commissioners Host Gun Safety Presentation for Public Health Week

In an effort to educate both gun owners and non-gun owners about the importance of safe storage practices, the Board of Commissioners in Camden County recently hosted a presentation during Public Health Week. Titled BeSMART for Kids: Safe Storage Saves Lives, the presentation aimed to normalize discussions about safe storage and prevent accidents.

Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, who serves as the liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services, stressed the importance of responsible gun ownership and emphasized that knowing how to have conversations about safe storage is crucial, even for those who do not own guns themselves. She highlighted that children may come into contact with firearms in the homes of friends or family members who do own them. By starting these conversations in Camden County, the hope is to raise awareness about the importance of safe gun storage practices and contribute to a safer environment for everyone.

The timing of the presentation during Public Health Week was intentional as it provided a platform to promote safe gun storage in relation to overall community health. The Board of Commissioners hopes that by addressing this issue head-on and encouraging open dialogue about safe storage practices, they can help create a safer environment for all residents.
