In the 2021-22 season, Cam Atkinson was honored with the team’s Bobby Clarke Trophy for Most Valuable Player and the Yanick Dupre Class Memorial Award. However, he missed the entire 2022-23 season due to a neck injury. Despite this, Flyers general manager Daniel Briere commended Atkinson for his exceptional work ethic, professionalism, and dedication during his time with the Flyers.
Atkinson had been signed through 2025 and had played with the Flyers for three years, during which he recorded 36 goals and 42 assists in 143 regular-season games. Prior to joining the Flyers, Atkinson had spent the first decade of his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Unfortunately, Atkinson’s neck injury forced him to miss out on playing in one full season with the team. Despite this setback, Briere noted Atkinson’s leadership both on and off the ice during his time with the Flyers. He highlighted Atkinson’s perseverance during a challenging rehabilitation process as an example of his exceptional character.
In making this difficult decision, Briere expressed that parting ways with Atkinson was never easy. However, he felt that it was necessary to allow both parties to move forward in their respective careers. The Flyers are now free to look for new talent and opportunities without being constrained by Atkinson’s contractual obligations.
