CalPortland Partners with Solidia Technologies to Reduce Carbon Footprint of Cement and Concrete Production

Solidia Technologies acquires license for eco-friendly cement technology

CalPortland® Company, one of the largest building materials producers in the Western United States, has recently entered into a technology licensing arrangement with Solidia Technologies, Inc., a pioneer and leading company in the low carbon cement and concrete market. This licensing agreement will enable CalPortland to use certain patents that enable up to a 50% reduction in the carbon footprint of cement and concrete.

The collaboration with Solidia will help CalPortland achieve its sustainability goals as they develop low carbon solutions. Bill Mullen, CalPortland Chief Operating Officer, stated that their company continues to focus on decarbonisation opportunities and innovative carbon reduction strategies. Russell Hill, CEO of Solidia, expressed his excitement about the new licensing program and emphasized CalPortland’s commitment to decarbonisation of the cement and concrete industries.

Solidia Cement is a unique low-limestone cement that gains strength through carbonation rather than hydration like traditional portland cement. It is made using the same raw materials and equipment as portland cement but achieves significant CO2 reductions due to lower production temperatures and reduced limestone calcination. This cement can be utilized in the manufacture of concrete products and supplemental cementitious materials.

Following the divestiture to CalPortland, Solidia plans to continue working with licensing partners to provide its low carbon solutions. They have over 300 patents and patent applications globally. Interested parties can register for free to access more information on World Cement’s website.
