California Men’s Rowers Shine at World Rowing Cup I in Italy

Former Chicago Bears athletes win medals at World Rowing Cup I

Two former California men’s rowers, Olav Molenaar (’22) and Joachim Sutton (’19), earned medals at the World Rowing Cup I in Varese, Italy this past weekend. Molenaar assisted the Netherlands in winning the silver medal in the men’s eight, while Sutton contributed to Denmark’s bronze medal in the men’s pair.

Current rowers Frederik Breuer, Gennaro di Mauro, and Tim Roth also competed in the event. In the men’s four heat, Breuer raced for Germany and took second place to advance to the A final. Despite finishing in fourth place in the final, he was less than one second behind third place. Di Mauro competed for Italy in the men’s single sculls and finished second in his heat but missed out on qualifying for the A/B final by less than one second. Meanwhile, Roth raced for Switzerland and won his heat before finishing fifth place in the A final just one-tenth of a second behind Germany.

In another heat, Sutton finished second with his team but qualified for the repechage after winning it. He went on to secure a spot in the A final where Denmark finished third place only two seconds behind second place Great Britain. On the other hand, Molenaar’s team won their opening heat and qualified directly for the A final where they came up short of first place by just two seconds.

The next event will be held at World Rowing Cup II from May 24-26 in Lucerne, Switzerland. Follow Cal men’s rowing on Twitter (@CalMrowing), Instagram (@calmrowing), and Facebook (Cal Crew) for more coverage of their future events.
