Bytedance sues US government to save TikTok video service from ban

In an effort to preserve its TikTok video service, Chinese company Bytedance has filed a lawsuit against the US government. The lawsuit seeks to block a law that would ban the app in the United States if Bytedance does not sell its operations in the country.

The TikTok ban law, also known as the TikTok Act, was passed by the US Congress and signed by President Joe Biden as part of a larger aid package. It gives Bytedance until January 19 of next year to sell TikTok’s operations in the United States or else face a ban from Apple and Google app stores.

Bytedance and TikTok argue that selling within the deadline is not possible and that the law will effectively force them to shut down their popular platform, silencing 170 million Americans who use it for communication. They are seeking a ruling from an appeals court to prevent enforcement of the law, which may escalate all the way to the US Supreme Court.
