BYD in Mexico: A Move to Boost Electric Vehicle Market, Create Jobs, and Counter Tariffs

BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is currently in the process of analyzing potential states in Mexico where it will build a plant. This plant is expected to create around 10,000 jobs, as stated by Jorge Vallejo, the general director of BYD in Mexico, in an interview with Bloomberg. Despite having received offers from 23 states, BYD has narrowed down the selection to three possible locations for the factory, and final negotiations are underway to determine the exact location. An official announcement regarding the chosen state is expected within the next few months.

BYD’s expansion plans in Mexico signify its commitment to the market, despite potential challenges like tariffs on Chinese vehicles imposed by the United States. The company is positioning itself to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles in Mexico. In contrast, Tesla, an American electric vehicle manufacturer, has yet to begin construction on a factory in Mexico despite previously announcing plans to do so in the state of Nuevo León. Despite this setback, Tesla remains committed to expanding its operations in Mexico and may continue to pursue new opportunities in the future.
