Busting the Kick Return Myth: Justin Fields Clarifies His Role with the Steelers This Fall

Justin Fields dismisses notion of returning kicks for Steelers: ‘That’s not my role’

Justin Fields has clarified that he will not be running back kick returns for the Pittsburgh Steelers this fall. The idea was initially proposed by Steelers running back Jaylen Warren during a podcast with Cam Heyward, where Smith suggested Fields could be utilized on kick returns in the upcoming season. However, Fields dismissed this notion during a recent interview, putting an end to the speculation.

Despite the attention given to the idea on social media, Fields found it amusing and emphasized that Smith had only used his name as an example to convey a message about the importance of special teams. With a focus on securing a starting position with his new team after being acquired through a trade deal in March from the Chicago Bears, Fields remains determined to compete for the starting quarterback role.

His impressive performance in the previous season, where he threw for over 2,500 yards and had 16 passing touchdowns, along with his 657 yards and four touchdowns rushing, demonstrates his capability as an impactful player on the field. However, considering intense competition for starting positions within the team and potential risks associated with kickoff returns, involving Fields in such roles would not be strategic.

Fields maintains a positive outlook and leaves room for unexpected developments while keeping his primary focus on securing a starting quarterback role. Despite competition from Russell Wilson, who was also acquired by the Steelers, Fields remains dedicated and competitive in his approach to the upcoming season.
