Building Resilient Health Systems: The Asia Pacific Health Security Action Framework Endorsed for Comprehensive Multi-Hazard Approach

Framework for Improving Health Security in the Asia Pacific Region

In 2023, the Asia Pacific Health Security Action Framework (APHSAF) was endorsed by Member States in response to the need for health systems that are prepared, resilient, and ready to respond to health security threats, including pandemics. The framework is designed to engage multisectoral actors in health security and reflect the complex nature of public health emergencies. By doing so, it presents six interconnected, multisectoral domains of work that together form a comprehensive, multi-hazard health security system.

The goals of the Framework support progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and universal health coverage while meeting the responsibilities and obligations of the International Health Regulations (2005). Through its implementation, countries in the Asia Pacific region can enhance their capacity to respond to public health emergencies effectively and efficiently.

By engaging various sectors and stakeholders in health security, the APHSAF aims to strengthen the overall health system’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to health security threats. This collaborative approach ensures that countries in the region are better equipped to address a wide range of public health emergencies while also working towards broader health and development goals. Overall, the APHSAF represents a crucial step towards building more resilient and prepared health systems in the Asia Pacific region.
