On Thursday, the Buffalo Bills strengthened their safety depth by signing Dee Delaney to a one-year contract. The 29-year-old brings five seasons of NFL experience to the team, having most recently played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the past three years. During his time with the Buccaneers, Delaney made five starts in 49 appearances.
Delaney’s arrival comes at a crucial time for the Bills, who are undergoing significant changes at the safety position following the departure of starters Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Poyer was released in March and has since signed with Miami, while Hyde remains unsigned and is considering retirement. The Bills are looking towards backup Taylor Rapp and offseason acquisition Mike Edwards to step up as their new starting safeties, with rookie Cole Bishop also in contention after being drafted in the second round last month.
In order to make room for Delaney on the roster, the Bills released recently signed receiver Quintez Cephus. Cephus had spent his first three NFL seasons with Detroit but missed out on 2023 due to a league suspension for betting on NFL games in 2022. His departure allows Delaney to join an already talented defensive backfield that includes Tre’Davious White, Daryl Phillips, and Taron Johnson.
