Bucks County is set to become one of just four locations in the United States equipped with a rapid toxicology analyzer device that can provide results in just 31 minutes. This cutting-edge technology was recently approved by the County Commissioners, who purchased the Randox rapid toxicology analyzer for $79,800. Bucks County Coroner Patti Campi presented the technology to the commissioners during a recent meeting and explained that obtaining a grant from the Opioid Settlement Fund allowed Bucks County to acquire it.
Campi highlighted the significant benefits of this device, including reducing the number of overdose autopsies that Bucks County has had to perform. With the device, toxicology tests can be processed rapidly, providing closure to families without long waits. The coroner’s office plans to fund the device using Bucks County’s share of the national opioid lawsuit settlement, ensuring that it can be put in place within 4-6 weeks.
One of the advantages of this technology is its potential cost savings, as it reduces the need for autopsies and other time-consuming processes. Additionally, there may be staff hiring opportunities as a result of implementing this device. Campi also noted that working with law enforcement will be crucial in determining how to effectively utilize this technology and address areas where deadly drugs may be present.
