Brown v. Board of Education Revisited: The AI-Powered Collaboration Bringing History to Life through Audio Simulation

Revisiting Brown v. Board of Education: A Simulation of the Supreme Court Case using Northwestern’s Artificial Intelligence Technology

Seventy years ago, America underwent a significant transformation with the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education. This decision put an end to legally enforced racial segregation in public schools, marking a crucial turning point in the battle for civil rights. Although there is no audio recording of the case, recent advancements in technology have allowed for the voices of key figures involved in the case to be recreated.

In a unique collaboration between Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism and Oyez, “Spooler.FM” has brought history to life through AI technology and original transcripts. The project, titled “Brown v. Board of Education Revisited,” simulates the voices of those involved in the case, including NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall, among others. Listeners can now hear a simulation of Marshall’s powerful dismissal of arguments for segregation and other pivotal moments from the case.

Jerry Goldman and James Boggs, founders of Oyez and Spooler respectively, explained how AI technology was used to transform an actor’s voice into important moments from the case. The project offers an immersive experience on their website that allows users to relive this historic event in a new way. As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education’s decision, we are reminded of how far we have come in our fight for equality and justice thanks to innovative technology and storytelling methods.

Overall, this project highlights how technology can bring history back to life by allowing us to hear what key figures said during significant events like Brown v. Board of Education’s decision seventy years ago.
