Bronx High School Students Take Home First Place in Science Competition with Eco-Friendly Battery Invention

Trio from Bronx High School of Science claims first place in regional science competition

A trio of high school students from Bedford Park have emerged victorious in a regional science competition for their innovative eco-friendly invention. The three sophomores, all from The Bronx High School of Science, impressed judges at ExploraVision, a prestigious competition organized by the National Science Teaching Association.

Their invention? A replacement for lithium-ion batteries with sodium-ion batteries. According to the students, sodium-ion batteries are a more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries. To further enhance efficiency, they utilized a live fungal species to interact with the chemical compound, resulting in a battery with a longer lifespan.

What sets these students apart is their dedication and ingenuity. They managed to complete their research paper and idea in just six weeks. Their outstanding achievement has earned them a spot in the national ExploraVision competition, which will take place in June in Washington D.C.

The students are excited to present their invention on a larger platform and hope to continue making strides in the field of eco-friendly technology. Their success serves as an inspiration to other young scientists and demonstrates the importance of innovation and sustainability in our world today.
