World Premiere Dates Revealed for Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ Musical

The world premiere of the musical “Purple Rain” has been announced, with a pre-Broadway run at the State Theatre in Minneapolis. Written by Tony winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and featuring the music of Prince, the show will begin previews on April 10, 2025, open on April 30, and close on May 11, 2025. Director Lileana Blain-Cruz will lead the production.

Prince’s iconic album “Purple Rain” has produced several hit songs such as “Let’s Go Crazy,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “When Doves Cry,” “Darling Nikki,” and “The Beautiful Ones.” The creative team has been granted access to Prince’s catalogue to incorporate more of his music into the Broadway show.

Hennepin Arts, the organization presenting “Purple Rain”, has announced the creative team for the show. Tony winner Jason Michael Webb will serve as the musical supervisor, overseeing arrangements and orchestrations. Longtime drummer of The Revolution, Bobby Z, and keyboardist Morris Hayes will also act as Prince music advisers to ensure the authenticity of the music. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins will adapt the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn.

The semi-autobiographical story in “Purple Rain” focuses on The Kid as he navigates his journey to become a rock star in Minneapolis. The lead role for the musical has not yet been cast. Members of the creative team are scheduled to participate in a panel at Paisley Park as part of Prince Celebration 2024.

Overall, “Purple Rain” is highly anticipated as it brings Prince’s beloved music to life on stage in a new and innovative way for audiences to experience his iconic hits and storytelling.
