Bringing Hope to Copper Country: Copper Shores Community Health Foundation Grants Enhance Local Services

Copper Shores Grants Small Funding to Health-Related Events and Opportunities in Western U.P.

Copper Shores Community Health Foundation recently granted several organizations in the western U.P. funds to support their important work in the community. One of the recipients, Equipment Loans of the Keweenaw (ELK), received $525 to create brochures showcasing the medical and adaptive recreational equipment they loan to children. ELK Funding Director Jen Shaud expressed excitement about being able to use the brochures to inform the community about their services, including activities like sled hockey and hand-cycling. The funds will also go towards improving ELK’s website to better display their rentable equipment, including a blog and Google calendar.

Another organization that received a grant is Canterbury House, which will be using $2,500 to expand its food pantry to serve more students. The pantry currently serves around 150 students and their families, but with the rising cost and demand for food, they hope to increase their reach by 50%. Canterbury House Development Director Jennifer Cowan highlighted the importance of providing international students with food they are comfortable with and emphasized the pantry’s commitment to meeting the specific needs of their clients.

In addition to ELK and Canterbury House, several other organizations received grants from the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation. Barkell Elementary School received $1,792 for handicap-accessible swing sets, CLK Schools received $984.26 for recess equipment, and Ontonagon Artist Collective received $2,000 for a watercolor painting event for seniors. These grants will help support the important work these organizations are doing in the community.
