Brighton High School Science Olympiad Team Stands Out in Scrambler Event with First-Place Finish

BHS Claims Top Spot in Scrambler Event at State Science Olympiad

At the Michigan Science Olympiad, held at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo over the weekend, the Brighton High School Science Olympiad team stood out. The team scored first in the state in the Scrambler event, where they had to construct a small car that traveled a distance of 6-12 meters. The students were ecstatic about their victory, having put in a tremendous amount of effort to achieve this success. Despite finishing in the middle of the pack overall, both the Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School teams performed admirably considering the fierce competition they faced.

Coach Shannan Pereira, who has been coaching Science Olympiad for nine years at Brighton High School and four years at Scranton Middle School, expressed her pride in her students’ efforts. As an engineer herself, Pereira has instilled a passion for science and engineering into her teams. She commended all her students for their hard work throughout the season and for representing their schools against some of the best teams in Michigan.

The Scranton Middle School team also had an impressive showing at the competition. They earned medals in two events: 6th place in Pentathlon, a relay race that required both physical tasks and answering science questions, and 7th place in Dynamic Planets, a written test that focused on large-scale geological events like earthquakes and volcanoes.

Pereira was proud of both teams’ accomplishments and encouraged them to continue pursuing their interests in science and engineering. The students left a lasting impression on their respective events, showcasing their talent and dedication to science education.
