Bridging the Healthcare Gap: Haitian American Nurses Association of Tampa Celebrates Annual Health Day and Fundraises for Nursing Scholarships

Nursing group strives to narrow healthcare disparity for Haitian community

In Tampa’s University area, a park was filled with messages promoting wellness and health screenings, accompanied by Haitian culture and music. The event was organized by the Haitian American Nurses Association of Tampa (H.A.N.A) as part of their annual health day celebration. Members of H.A.N.A emphasized the importance of bridging gaps in healthcare access for underprivileged and minority communities, where language, transportation, and cultural differences often pose barriers to receiving necessary medical care.

For ten years, H.A.N.A has been working to provide resources and support to local residents in these communities. To further their efforts, they are currently fundraising and seeking sponsors for their annual gala on July 20th. The primary goal of the gala is to offer nursing scholarships to deserving local students who are passionate about pursuing careers in nursing.

Edline Pierre, president of H.A.N.A expressed her hope that with increased community support, the organization would be able to offer even more scholarships to aspiring nurses who want to make a difference in their communities.

While financial contributions may not be possible for everyone, Arnell Filsaime-Johnson from H.A.N.A emphasized that every form of support matters – whether it’s engaging with the organization, participating in events or offering a helping hand can make a significant impact on their outreach efforts.

In other news, Denise and Mike Brennan are facing a financial strain of over $7000 after their vehicle was damaged by flying debris on I-75 earlier this year despite being assured by a state contractor that the matter would be taken care of. Now six months later they are hoping for assistance from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to cover the expenses incurred due to this unforeseen incident.

Overall, organizations like Haitian American Nurses Association of Tampa continue to work towards providing necessary resources and support to underserved communities while individuals can contribute in any way they can towards making a positive impact on society
