Bridging the Gap: How SMMA Integrates Scientific Knowledge into Lab Design through Educational Initiatives

The Importance of Lab Designers Understanding Scientific Language

At SMMA, we understand the importance of effective communication with lab scientists to create optimal lab design spaces that meet their needs. We are constantly seeking ways to improve our communication channels with scientists and educate ourselves on the scientific work being conducted in our designs. To achieve this, we participate in educational programs offered by science organizations like I2SL, My Green Lab, NEBSA, Lab Design Conference, Lab Manager, and Harvard School of Public Health. These programs provide a platform for multiple stakeholders to share their expertise on specific topics related to lab design.

Learning about the science being conducted in labs provides several advantages for lab designers. It helps break down the language barrier between architects and scientists, allowing for more effective communication and collaboration. This is crucial in modern lab design, where projects require designers to consider various factors such as environmental and safety standards while serving the needs of end users, cities, and institutions. By understanding the daily challenges faced by scientists, we can design lab spaces with better flow, usability, and lower levels of risk.

Educational initiatives also offer new perspectives and approaches to lab design. By expanding our knowledge of the science behind lab work, we can explore alternative and more sustainable design solutions that tackle challenges related to risk and sustainability. Our ultimate goal is to create net zero energy and carbon neutral lab spaces that prioritize both functionality and sustainability. Programs like My Green Lab’s Ambassador Program further enhance our expertise in designing safe and sustainable buildings.
