Bridging Language and Health Barriers: The Kiwanis Club and VHC Health Host Inaugural Health Fair in Arlington

Partnership Brings Health Fair to Arlington

The Kiwanis Club of Arlington and VHC Health recently partnered to host their first health fair at Alice West Fleet Elementary School. Funding for the event came from the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation, with support from the Kiwanis Club and various social-safety-net agencies such as the Arlington Food Assistance Center, Doorways, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and Arlington County government personnel.

The health fair aimed to provide essential health services to low-income residents, uninsured, and underinsured individuals. Megan Canote, BSN, RN, director of the VHC Health Outpatient Clinic, highlighted the importance of this initiative.

Community outreach efforts were carried out in both English and Spanish, with plans to include Mongolian translations next year to reach an even broader demographic within Arlington’s immigrant community. The success of their first health fair demonstrates the impact of such partnerships in promoting wellness and support for those in need.
