Breastfeeding: A New Initiative at UAMS Takes Step Towards Better Health for Infants

Baptist Health in Fort Smith launches breast milk drop-off center to support infants in need

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences recently announced the opening of a milk bank on May 16, providing an opportunity for women to donate their excess breast milk to help babies in need. This new initiative will help support those who are unable to breastfeed due to lactation issues or other health concerns.

Breast milk is known to provide infants with essential nutrition for growth and development while also reducing their risk of both short-term and long-term illnesses. Dr. Misty Virmani, the executive medical director of the UAMS milk bank, emphasized the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies, including a decreased risk of cancers, illnesses, infections, and sudden infant death. Breastfeeding can also help women regain hormonal balance and organ function postpartum.

The newly opened Baptist Health milk depot is the first of its kind in the River Valley region and the University of Arkansas is the only organization in the state offering such services. This program marks the 33rd of its kind in the United States and Canada. Potential donors will be screened to ensure the safety and quality of the milk before distribution.
