Breaking the Stigma: The Lexington Legends Embrace Mental Health and Wellness for their Players

As the Atlantic League continues to grow, so too does the importance of mental health and wellness for professional baseball players. The Lexington Legends, a team that has been making waves in the league since its inception, is taking this issue head-on with its Legends program.

The Legends have partnered with Manual, a standout in mental health tech, to provide their players with access to an online wellness service tailored specifically to men’s health. General Manager Justin Ferrarella describes the ballpark as a home away from home for many of his players, who are working hard to reach the league or make a comeback.

Manager Gregg Zaun, a former major league player who knows all too well the pressures and challenges that come with being a professional athlete, emphasizes the importance of addressing mental health issues early on in order to prevent more serious consequences down the road. The Legends have designed their program to support young men who may be resistant to traditional forms of mental health support, understanding that mental resilience is key both on and off the field.

The Lexington Legends are committed to providing their players with the tools and resources they need to succeed not only as athletes but as individuals. This proactive approach sets them apart from other clubs in the Atlantic League. Those who have funded the Manual connection have praised the positive impact it has had on players’ lives, recognizing its value in helping them navigate the ups and downs of professional baseball.

In order to further raise awareness about mental health and wellness in sports, the Legends are planning a Mental Health Awareness night at the end of the season. This event will help shine a spotlight on this important issue and encourage open conversations about mental health challenges faced by athletes at all levels.
