Breast cancer is a leading cause of death for women in the United States, claiming over 40,000 lives each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A recent study found that only 65% of women between the ages of 50-74 with three or more health-related social needs are up to date on their mammograms. These social needs include feelings of isolation, loss of work or reduced hours, reliance on food stamps, lack of transportation, barriers to accessing care, and general life dissatisfaction. The CDC reports that women dealing with these issues are less likely to prioritize getting a mammogram.
To address this issue and empower women about their health, AdventHealth Tampa is hosting a Women’s Health and Cancer Prevention event on June 22. For a ticket fee of $10, attendees can hear from multiple health experts on various topics related to women’s health, including cancer prevention, heart health, and more. The event will also feature a marketplace, facials, massages, health screenings, and other resources. Ticket proceeds will benefit the Kay Meyer Breast Care Center, helping to support patients who cannot afford mammograms and biopsies.
As Florida prepares for a new law set to take effect in four months that makes it illegal for people to sleep in public spaces or parks with the intention of pushing those in need into shelters and programs. However, critics like Aaron Swift from the Homeless Leadership Alliance of Pinellas are concerned that this approach could create more challenges for homeless individuals. They believe that instead of criminalizing homelessness, there should be an increase in funding towards programs that provide housing and support services for those in need.
