Breaking the Barriers: Why Many Women Miss Their Mammograms and How to Encourage Prioritization of Health

Don’t Forget: May is Women’s Health Month – Encourage the Women in Your Life Over 40 to Schedule a Mammogram

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has highlighted significant barriers that can negatively impact women’s health. Lack of transportation, dissatisfaction with life, and the cost of care are just a few of the factors that contribute to why many women do not receive the recommended mammograms. In fact, approximately 35% of women over the age of 50 are not up to date with their annual mammogram exams.

Dr. Joseph Sutcliffe, a radiologist at Baptist M&S Imaging Center North Central, understands that women often prioritize the health of others before their own. However, he emphasizes that it’s crucial for women to prioritize their own health and well-being, especially when it comes to preventative measures like regular mammograms.

In Texas, insurance companies are mandated to cover the cost of a mammogram without requiring a co-pay, including for those with Medicare and Medicaid coverage. As Mother’s Day approaches, Sutcliffe encourages men to motivate all women over the age of 40 to prioritize their health. He stresses the importance of expressing love and concern for their well-being and reminding them that they deserve to live a long, healthy life.

There are various clinics and hospitals that offer payment plans for those without insurance, as well as local nonprofits that can provide assistance for necessary healthcare needs. By working together as a community, we can support and encourage women to take proactive steps towards maintaining their health. It’s time for us to prioritize our own health and well-being!
