Breaking the Barriers: American Women’s Dominance at Madrid’s Singles Draw

Coco Gauff has the chance to surpass Aryna Sabalenka for world No. 2 in Madrid.

In the Madrid singles draw, 13 American women will compete, including third-seeded Gauff and wild card Amanda Anisimova. Gauff will face Arantxa Rus in her opening match and may later face Anisimova in a potential last-16 match against Naomi Osaka. Sabalenka, a two-time champion in Madrid, will meet either Magda Linette or Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her first match, with Collins as a potential last-16 opponent.

Gauff has had an impressive season so far with a record of 19-6. However, she is only 3-3 in Madrid and her best result was reaching the last 16 in 2022. Sabalenka, on the other hand, has had successful victories in Madrid, including winning the finals against Iga Swiatek and Ashleigh Barty in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Sabalenka achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 3 after winning the US Open in 2023 where she defeated Gauff to claim her first Grand Slam singles title.
