Breaking the Barrier: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s Record-Breaking Performance in the Women’s 400m Hurdles

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone sets world-leading time in her first 400m hurdles race of the season

On May 31, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone demonstrated her dominance in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Edwin Moses Legends Meet. She ran an impressive time of 52.70 seconds, breaking the world record and surpassing the entry standard for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. However, she still needs to secure her spot on Team USA at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Oregon from June 21-30.

Although McLaughlin-Levrone made the race look easy, she acknowledged that there is still room for improvement as she prepares for Paris 2024. Her time was enough to claim the world lead in the event, but Dutch world champion Femke Bol is set to start her season at the 2024 Stockholm Diamond League on June 2. With this in mind, McLaughlin-Levrone must continue to work hard and improve if she wants to maintain her position at the top of the podium come Paris 2024.

During the meet, McLaughlin-Levrone had a chance to speak with fellow two-time Olympic champion Edwin Moses, who dominated the men’s 400m hurdles from 1977 to 1987. Moses won over 120 races in his career and set the world record three times. It is likely that he shared valuable insights with McLaughlin-Levrone as they discussed their respective journeys to success and how they can continue to improve in their respective events leading up to Paris 2024. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how McLaughlin-Levrone will use this advice as she aims to surpass Moses’ impressive medal count in Paris 2024.
