Ukrainian missile attack in Crimea leaves five dead and nearly 100 injured

On Sunday, at least five people were killed and over 100 were injured in a Ukrainian bombing of the Crimean peninsula. The port city of Sevastopol, which houses the headquarters of the Russian Fleet in the Black Sea, was targeted in the attack.

The Russian military reported that Ukraine used five ATACMS missiles, with four of them being intercepted. Videos from the attack show people on a beach fleeing after hearing explosions, although the authenticity of the images has not been verified by AFP. Sevastopol is a regular target of attacks and is a key logistical point for the Russian army.

Russia has accused the USA of supplying weapons to Ukraine, which they believe was used in the attack on Crimea. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the responsibility for the attack falls on Washington for providing weapons to Ukraine, as well as on the authorities in Kiev.

Ukraine has been facing a Russian offensive for two years and usually responds to attacks with strikes on Russian regions or occupied areas. The Russian Defense Ministry described the attack on Sevastopol as a terrorist attack against civilian infrastructure using American ATACMS tactical missiles loaded with cluster bombs. In response, Russia bombed Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, leaving one dead and ten injured.
