Breaking Ground: US-UK Sign Historic AI Agreement to Ensure Safety and Security of Emerging Technology

Bilateral agreements on artificial intelligence security signed between Great Britain and the USA

The United States and the United Kingdom have signed a historic agreement on artificial intelligence, marking a significant step in addressing the safety considerations of emerging AI technology. This bilateral agreement sets a precedent for international cooperation in this area as governments around the world advocate for increased regulation of emerging technologies.

The agreement outlines how the two governments will share technical knowledge, information, and talent on AI security. This collaboration between the UK and US is inspired by the close collaboration between the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the US National Security Agency on intelligence and security matters.

Under this agreement, the UK’s new AI Safety Institute (AISI) and its US counterpart will exchange expertise through the secondment of researchers from both countries. These institutes will work together on independently evaluating private AI models developed by companies like OpenAI and Google. This partnership is designed to address potential risks such as malicious cyber attacks and the development of biological weapons associated with emerging AI models.
