Breaking Down the Stigma: Mental Health and Men in May’s Awareness Month

Therapists shine a light on their efforts to support others during Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is crucial to raise awareness about the mental health challenges faced by men. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, approximately one in ten men in the United States suffer from depression or anxiety, but only half of them seek help. Mental Health America reports that more men take their own lives in this country than women, with New Hanover County recording a suicide rate nearly double the national average last year, with 83% of all reported suicides being men.

Therapist Gage Howard explains that there are several reasons why men may be hesitant to seek treatment for their mental health issues. One common reason is that they feel the need to hide their emotions and may feel inferior when they do open up. However, therapists like Adam Howell are working hard to break down these stigmas and encourage men to seek help when needed.

Howard emphasizes that asking for help is a brave step and reminds us that support is always available. Wilmington Mental Health stresses the importance of breaking down the stigma associated with counseling and therapy, especially for men who may be reluctant to seek help due to societal expectations. If you are struggling with your mental health, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. The National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for those who need it most.
