Partnerships at ECU Health’s Mental Health Expo Link Community with Resources

In a recent presentation, Dr. David Ryan, an obstetrician-gynecologist with ECU Health and a clinical assistant professor of Addiction Medicine at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, emphasized the importance of reducing stigma around addiction and viewing it as a disease. He highlighted the need to break down stigmas surrounding life-saving medications used in addiction treatment.

Glenn Simpson, the service line administrator for behavioral health at ECU Health, stressed the significance of events like the Mental Health Expo in bringing exhibitors together to showcase available resources in eastern North Carolina. Simpson shared information about providers, Trillium Health Resources, and the 988 Helpline team present at the event. He also mentioned upcoming projects such as a state-of-the-art behavioral health hospital in Greenville set to open in 2025.

Lillie Malpass, executive director of Pitt County Coalition on Substance Use, emphasized the importance of connecting with community members and other organizations at events like the Mental Health Expo. Malpass highlighted how these gatherings provide valuable opportunities for exchanging information and breaking out of organizational silos to collaborate with prevention, recovery, and treatment organizations towards addressing addiction and mental health challenges in the community. The resources provided by ECU Health Behavioral Health Services are essential in supporting individuals seeking help and treatment for addiction and mental health issues.
