Beatrice Chebet, a Kenyan athlete, made history by breaking the women’s 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday. Chebet finished with a time of 28 minutes and 54.15 seconds at Hayward Field, marking her first 10,000m race since March 2020. She surpassed Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey’s previous world record of 29:01.03 set in 2021, becoming the first woman to run the event in under 29 minutes.
Following closely behind Chebet was Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay who finished in second place with a time of 29:05.92, making it the third-fastest time in the event’s history. Tsegay is known for her exceptional talent and dedication in long-distance running and set the world record for the women’s 5k race at last year’s Pre Classic.
