Breaking Barriers: Kenyan Athlete Beatrice Chebet Smashes Women’s 10,000m World Record at Prefontaine Classic

Beatrice Chebet, a Kenyan athlete, made history by breaking the women’s 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday. Chebet finished with a time of 28 minutes and 54.15 seconds at Hayward Field, marking her first 10,000m race since March 2020. She surpassed Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey’s previous world record of 29:01.03 set in 2021, becoming the first woman to run the event in under 29 minutes.

Following closely behind Chebet was Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay who finished in second place with a time of 29:05.92, making it the third-fastest time in the event’s history. Tsegay is known for her exceptional talent and dedication in long-distance running and set the world record for the women’s 5k race at last year’s Pre Classic.

Beatrice Chebet has recently achieved great success including winning silver and bronze medals in the 5k at the world championships in the past two years respectively. Her recent win marks her as one of top contenders to make her Olympic debut later this summer showcasing her skills and determination on global stage.

The Prefontaine Classic is still ongoing with more events scheduled throughout Saturday which can be viewed live on NBC, NBCSports.com, The NBC Sports app and Peacock from 4-6 p.m ET. These events will feature some of top athletes competing across various track and field disciplines adding to excitement of this prestigious competition.
