The government has recently approved a reform aimed at deregulating and standardizing products in Israel that meet European quality standards. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Economy Minister Nir Barkat spearheaded the initiative, with the belief that “What’s good for Europe is good for Israel.” The reform aims to simplify the importation process of goods sold in Europe into Israel, leading to increased competition and lower prices.
The coalition plans to push the reform through the first reading in the Knesset before the upcoming vacation, finalize it during the break, and secure approval in the second and third readings immediately upon parliament’s return. Importers will no longer need prior import authorization if a product meets EU standards and is not classified as high-risk, but will need a declaration of conformity and a passport for their goods. Random checks at ports and markets will replace pre-import checks.
Certain products such as oral hygiene products and cosmetics for infants and pregnant women are not included in this reform.
