Recently, Foreign Minister Abdul Latif al-Zayani of Bahrain met with Ali Bagheri-Kani, the acting Foreign Minister of Iran, in Tehran to discuss the restoration of relations between the two countries. The talks were held in the context of the historical ties, religious connections, good neighborly relations, shared history and mutual interests that exist between Iran and Bahrain.
In 2011, Bahrain’s Shiite-majority population accused Iran of interference in its internal affairs. However, more moderate monarchies in the region have been working towards improving their relations with Iran. This trend is reflected in Bahrain’s efforts to improve its ties with Iran. The discussions between the foreign ministers of the two countries signify a shift in Bahrain’s approach towards Iran and a willingness to engage in dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
