Brazil Hosts Women’s World Cup in 2027: A First for South America and an Opportunity to Promote Gender Equality

Brazil will host The World Cup once again

Brazil has been awarded the privilege of hosting the women’s World Cup in 2027, marking a first for the tournament as it will take place in South America. The decision was made on May 17, and Brazil’s successful bid, titled “It’s All Ready,” highlighted the country’s existing infrastructure to host the event. This infrastructure was largely put in place for the 2014 men’s World Cup, organized during former president Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva’s term.

Brazil has a vast experience in hosting major sporting events, including the Pan-American Games in 2007, the Olympic Games in 2016, and the Copa America in 2019 and 2021. The women’s football championship in Brazil, established in 2017, is also part of the legacy program from the 2014 World Cup. The upcoming women’s World Cup provides an opportunity to promote gender equality in sports, as emphasized by Julia Costa, director of women’s football promotion at the Sports Ministry.

Compared to the men’s tournament, the women’s World Cup in 2027 will have significantly lower expenses and revenue. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) estimates that investments in temporary structures will total USD 13 million, less than 10 percent of the amount spent for the 2014 World Cup. Importantly, no public funds will be required for the 2027 event. However, past experience shows that such estimates are often exceeded once all costs are considered.
