The World Health Organization (WHO) Science Council is promoting equitable access to genomics research and technologies worldwide, with a focus on their application in clinical care, ancestry, food safety, infection control, and the “One Health” approach. In May 2024, PAHO will host a regional meeting in Brasilia, Brazil to enhance the impact of effective genomics research in the Americas.
Genomics is the study of an organism’s complete set of genes, how they function and interact with each other and the environment. It differs from genetics in that it focuses on characterizing all the genes of an organism as opposed to studying individual genes. Representatives from PAHO Member States and regional experts will collaborate at this upcoming event to advance genomics research and precision medicine in the region.
Dr. Sebastian Garcia Saiso, Director of EIH at PAHO, emphasizes the significance of this event in promoting genomics implementation in the region. Dr. Ludovic Reveiz, Advisor for Health Research at EIH/PAHO highlights how genomic knowledge and technologies can improve disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. This meeting is organized by PAHO’s SK/EIH unit with support from WHO, the PAHO office in Brazil and the Brazilian Ministry of Health. It will bring together representatives from PAHO Member States and regional experts in precision medicine.
